A guide to weatherproof TV enclosure

What is a weatherproof TV enclosure?

It is an outdoor waterproof, dustproof, and insect-proof box that allows you to put a TV inside it. Most TV enclosure supports TVs of 30 to 60 inches. With the help of this, you can install a TV outside of your house; whether be it on your patio, deck, garden, or courtyard. To gear it up a notch, you can set up a hot tub near the TV and kickback, have a couple of beers, and throw in Netflix.

Features of a typical weatherproof TV enclosure

Built quality

This section focuses on the built quality of a typical weatherproof TV enclosure so that you can get a brief idea. TV enclosures are usually made of polymer, metal, or wood. Although polymer or plastic and metal are more often used than wood. The body is made of plastic, but it’s not brittle. It is thick and hard enough to withstand sunlight and snow without cracking. The front panel is made of strengthened glasses like plexiglass. There is a thick rubber gasket behind the plexiglass. The plexiglass folds over the top and there are a bunch of screw points that go through the front panel.

Vents

To allow air circulation, there will be vents present on the side of the box. This vent has a piece of filter that keeps dust and small insects out. Advanced weatherproof TV enclosures may also have a temperature-controlled cooling fan with a thermostat to keep your TV cool.

A too low temperature could also be detrimental to your TV, so keeping it within the operating temperature is wise. If you live in an area where it gets too cold, you can cap the vents to keep the temperature of the TV inside the box.

Security

You’ll have front locks on the cabinet that prevents the TV from being stolen. This is particularly useful if you don’t have a fence in your backyard. Or if you’re going to use a TV in a business setting, this prevents the TV from being messed up by people.

How will you maintain it?

Open up the front knob to lift the plexiglass cover and stretch the two support arms to keep it still. You can wipe your TV down during this or if you want physical access to the TV, there you go.

The benefit of having a weatherproof TV enclosure

If you want, there are outdoor TV available but they are extremely expensive. In most cases, people don’t think it’s wise to spend a huge amount on an outdoor TV. It’s not always convenient to watch TV outside because the sun won’t be shining 24/7, there going to be rain, snow, dust, and not to forget mosquito bites.

If you don’t want to spend a lot on a luxurious, waterproof outdoor TV, you can just put your regular TV in the TV enclosure. Outdoor TVs are only used when you’re relaxing outside, having a barbecue, or in the hot tub.

But you’ll need an additional speaker

To make it weatherproof, insect-proof, and dustproof, maybe you’ll have to compromise elsewhere. Blocked vents along with the tight glass front panel, there’s no space for the sound to get out, so it gets suppressed. It won’t be anything of help if you increase the volume as it will come out muffled.

Here’s one solution to help you with the sound. You can buy a pair of small weatherproof speakers and stick them to the bottom of the enclosure and connect it with the TV using a 3.5mm jack.

Setting up

Most TV enclosure cabinets are 5-8 inches deep and come with their own bracket that you can mount to the back of the TV. You center the bracket on the TV by measuring the actual TV. Just put it in the center of the bracket and attach the bracket to the back of the TV. Line the pre-drilled holes of the enclosure with the TV and then mount your bracket to the back of the TV. So the TV shield lies between the two brackets.
